Multimodal transport: combining road, rail and air for efficient logistics

Single-mode solutions are often no longer enough — multimodal transport links road, rail and air into one managed system for faster, more sustainable, more reliable delivery.

Multimodal transport moves goods using several modes — for example truck plus rail plus air — but manages the whole flow as one integrated shipment, with unified documentation and a single point of accountability. Unlike intermodal transport, where goods stay in the same container, multimodal allows transhipment between modes while keeping end-to-end control. It makes sense when crossing borders with different infrastructures, for sensitive or urgent shipments, and when optimising cost (long legs by rail, the last mile by road). Each mode plays to its strengths: road is the most flexible and handles first and last mile; rail offers high capacity and stability over long distances with up to ~75 % lower CO₂ per tonne than trucking; air is fastest for time-critical or high-value goods. Success depends on coordination, strong partners, customs know-how and digital support — TMS, real-time tracking and predictive routing — so the chain runs as a single, reliable whole. HOPI Global Solution connects these modes, including rail from China to Europe.
